The first teaser for A Minecraft Movie came out in September, and people had mixed reactions. Many viewers were unsure about the movie’s CGI effects, the way the characters looked, and—most notably—Jason Momoa’s hairstyle. As expected, the internet was flooded with funny memes poking fun at these elements. Despite this, there was some hope for the movie because of its strong cast, which includes Jason Momoa and Jack Black. Now, the full trailer has been released. While the unusual design choices are still present (and yes, they are odd), the film seems to be shaping up as a fun, lighthearted family adventure. However, it doesn’t seem to offer much in terms of an in-depth storyline.

Behind the Scenes of the Minecraft Movie

The movie has been a long time in the making. Jared Hess, known for directing Nacho Libre with Jack Black, eventually took the helm of the project. The COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike caused delays, but filming finally wrapped earlier this year in Auckland, New Zealand. The movie is set to release in theaters in spring 2025.

The Story

The official plot summary introduces us to a world where creativity isn’t just encouraged—it’s a key to survival. The story follows four characters:

  • Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (played by Jason Momoa)
  • Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen)
  • Natalie (Emma Myers)
  • Dawn (Danielle Brooks)

These four misfits are dealing with their everyday problems when they’re unexpectedly transported through a mysterious portal into the “Overworld.” This is a strange, cubic world full of imagination and danger. To return home, the group must learn the ways of this blocky universe, defend it from hostile creatures like Piglins and Zombies, and go on an exciting quest. Along the way, they’re guided by an expert crafter named Steve, portrayed by Jack Black.

Fans of the game will immediately recognize Steve as one of Minecraft’s original playable characters. In the Overworld, the group must not only survive but also rediscover their unique creative talents—skills they’ll need when they return to their own lives.

The Visuals and Easter Eggs

The teaser trailer featured The Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour” and showcased some of the movie’s surreal world. The landscape looks like something out of The Lord of the Rings, but everything has Minecraft’s signature blocky style. For instance, there’s a pink sheep with a cube-shaped head, which is sure to delight fans of the game.

The new full trailer offers more details. It starts with Jack Black’s character, Steve, narrating his backstory. He recalls his childhood dream of mining, even though there were obstacles—like a grumpy old man telling him to stay out of the mines. But Steve was determined. He grew up, started digging, and eventually discovered a portal to a magical world “where anything you can imagine is possible—as long as it can be built out of blocks.”

What to Expect

In the Overworld, the group teams up with Steve to stop dark forces that threaten to destroy this creative wonderland. Their mission involves “creating something amazing,” but the trailer keeps the details vague. Instead, it focuses on humor, action, and Easter eggs from the game. Fans will enjoy nods to iconic Minecraft moments, like Garrett’s funny teleportation attempt with an Ender pearl and a chaotic nighttime battle with Block Zombies.

Release Date

A Minecraft Movie will be released internationally on April 2, 2025, and in North America on April 4, 2025.

Final Thoughts

While the movie may not be groundbreaking, it looks like a fun and adventurous ride for families and Minecraft fans alike. With its quirky humor, memorable characters, and plenty of nods to the beloved game, it’s shaping up to be an enjoyable cinematic experience for anyone who loves building worlds out of blocks.
