A group of former Environmental Protection Agency officials is warning that the administration’s deregulatory push could allow AI data centers to expand faster while facing fewer environmental checks. In a new briefing and report, the Environmental Protection Network argued that weakening federal safeguards may expose nearby communities to more air pollution, water strain, and public health risks.
AI data center pollution is becoming a major policy fight
AI data centers require enormous amounts of electricity to run servers, cooling systems, and networking infrastructure. As demand for generative AI tools grows, tech companies are racing to build and expand facilities across the country. That growth has intensified concerns about local emissions, diesel backup generators, power plant demand, and pressure on electric grids.
The former EPA officials say the issue is not simply that data centers use a lot of energy. Their concern is that federal agencies may be removing or weakening the rules meant to limit the harmful side effects of that expansion.
Trump’s EPA wants to speed up AI infrastructure
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin has framed deregulation as part of a broader effort to make America “the AI capital of the world.” Since the start of Trump’s term, the EPA and White House have moved to roll back a number of environmental rules, arguing that faster permitting and fewer regulatory barriers are needed to support industrial growth, energy production, and AI infrastructure.

The Environmental Protection Network is urging the administration to adopt what it calls a “Data Center Health Protection Pledge.” The pledge would signal that federal agencies are taking the environmental and public health impacts of AI infrastructure seriously, even while supporting new construction.
The group’s recommendations center on stronger transparency, health-focused permitting, pollution monitoring, and better coordination between agencies. In practical terms, that means making sure data centers do not get a free pass simply because they are tied to AI development.
Why AI data centers affect local communities
Data centers are often marketed as clean, high-tech facilities. From the outside, they may look like quiet warehouses. But their environmental impact depends heavily on where their electricity comes from, how much water they use for cooling, and how often they rely on backup generators.
If a data center draws power from fossil-fuel-heavy grids, its indirect emissions can be significant. If it operates large diesel generators during outages or testing, nearby residents may face additional air pollution. In drought-prone areas, water use can also become a flashpoint.
