Larry David is officially done with retirement, and this time, he’s taking down the entire American experiment. Just two years after closing the curtain on Curb Your Enthusiasm, television’s favorite misanthrope is bringing his trademark social warfare to a massive new playground: the history books.

HBO has officially dropped the trailer for Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America, a seven-episode limited sketch comedy series. Co-created with Jeff Schaffer and executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions, the series arrives right in time for the nation’s 250th anniversary. The tagline sets the stage perfectly: “Those who don’t know history… are doomed to watch Larry David repeat it.”

The Premise: How Larry Subverts America’s Legacy

The premise of the limited series is a masterstroke of historical satire. Instead of exploring his own modern neuroses, Larry David inserts himself into the most pivotal moments of American history. According to co-creator Jeff Schaffer, David is playing characters who “didn’t change history” but were instead “largely ignored by history.”

We already have our first look at what this looks like in practice. A newly unveiled sneak peek shows Larry playing an ordinary man in Times Square on V-J Day. Attempting to recreate the iconic photo of a sailor kissing a nurse, Larry’s attempts go completely off the rails, ending with him being publicly labeled a “pervo-Nazi.” Other confirmed sketches include Larry bringing his unique brand of irritation to the signing of the Constitution and the Wright brothers’ first flight.

Feature Video: Watch the Official Trailer

The teaser trailer opens with an unexpected guest star: executive producer Barack Obama. The former President looks directly into the camera to deliver the ultimate review: “I have sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders… Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David.” Watch the official teaser below to see Larry ask the 44th President if he can use him as a medical emergency contact:

Technical Specs & The Heavy-Hitting Comedy Cast

HBO isn’t holding back on production values or star power for this Semiquincentennial event. The series transitions away from the loose, improvisational handheld look of Curb into high-end, premium cinematic sketch landscapes.

  • The Production Architecture: Seven standalone episodes written by Larry David and Jeff Schaffer, with Schaffer directing.
  • The Comedy Royalty Cast: Bill Hader stars as Abraham Lincoln alongside Kathryn Hahn as Mary Todd Lincoln. Jon Hamm and Sean Hayes team up to portray the Wright brothers.
  • The Ultimate Reunion: Longtime collaborator Jerry Seinfeld reunites with Larry for a special sketch about explorers Lewis and Clark.
  • Curb Alumni Returns: Expect familiar faces from the Curb universe to anchor the historical chaos, including Vince Vaughn and Susie Essman.

With new episodes rolling out weekly from June 26 through August 7, 2026, Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness is shaping up to be the undisputed television event of the summer.
