Huawei is pushing deeper into the foldable phone race with the new Huawei Mate XT 2, its third trifold handset and its latest attempt to make ultra-large folding screens feel practical. Launched in China, the Mate XT 2 marks a noticeable design shift for Huawei — and yes, Samsung’s influence is hard to miss.
The headline change is the move to an inward-folding trifold phone design, similar to the approach used by Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold. Huawei’s earlier trifold models used a more exposed accordion-style layout, but the Mate XT 2 appears to take a more protective route by folding the main display inward when closed.

The original Huawei Mate XT stood out because it did not need a separate cover display. Its folding screen wrapped around the outside, creating a striking design that helped the device look futuristic from every angle. That made the first Mate XT visually impressive, but potentially more vulnerable to scratches, bumps, and daily wear. With the Mate XT 2 trifold, Huawei seems to be prioritizing durability and practicality by hiding more of the flexible display inside the device when it is not fully open.
It is a move that brings Huawei closer to Samsung’s thinking. Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold also uses an inward-folding setup, a design choice that helps protect the larger inner screen while giving the phone a more familiar closed form.
Huawei adds a privacy display to its latest foldable phone
The other major upgrade is the Mate XT 2’s privacy-enhancing display. Huawei says the feature is designed to make it harder for people nearby to peek at the screen from the side, a useful addition for anyone reading messages, working on documents, or checking sensitive information in public.
This is another area where Samsung got there first in the mainstream flagship conversation. The Galaxy S26 Ultra introduced a similar privacy-focused display feature earlier this year, giving users more control over who can see what is on their screen.
For a trifold phone, the idea makes even more sense. A device like the Huawei Mate XT 2 can open into a much larger display, which is great for productivity and media, but it also makes the screen more visible to people around you. Samsung still has an advantage in global availability and brand recognition, especially in markets where Huawei’s phones face software and ecosystem limitations. But in China, Huawei remains a serious force, and the Mate XT 2 gives the company another high-profile device to challenge Samsung’s foldable momentum.
Is the Huawei Mate XT 2 launching globally?
For now, the Huawei Mate XT 2 has launched in China. Huawei previously released the original Mate XT internationally a few months after its China debut, so a wider rollout is possible, but availability has not been confirmed in the same way for every market.
If Huawei does bring the Mate XT 2 outside China, the key questions will be pricing, app support, and whether the privacy display and inward-folding design are enough to tempt buyers away from Samsung’s foldable lineup.
Either way, the Mate XT 2 is a clear sign that the next phase of foldable phones will not be limited to standard book-style designs. Trifold phones are becoming more polished, more protective, and more privacy-conscious — and Huawei clearly wants to be seen as a leader in that race.
