Comcast is giving millions of Xfinity customers a new smart home feature without asking them to buy another gadget. Starting August 18th, compatible Xfinity gateways can use Wi-Fi signals to detect motion inside the home, effectively turning the router you already have into a basic activity sensor.
The feature, called WiFi Motion, is arriving through an update to the Xfinity Internet app and is included at no extra cost for supported hardware. According to Comcast, Xfinity gateways XB7 and newer are eligible.
How Comcast WiFi Motion Works on Xfinity Routers
Instead of relying on a camera, infrared sensor, or separate smart home accessory, Comcast WiFi Motion looks for changes in the Wi-Fi signal between your Xfinity gateway and connected devices around the house. When movement disrupts those signals, the system can interpret that activity and send an alert through the app.
