Paramount+ is adding another gritty crime project to its development slate, and this one comes with a familiar title. A Cop Land series adaptation is now in the works at the streamer, with James Mangold returning to the world of his 1997 Miramax film alongside Robert Levine.
The project comes from Paramount Television Studios and Miramax Television, and was reportedly picked up by Paramount+ after a competitive situation. For now, the series is in development, which means there is no confirmed cast, production start date, trailer, or release window just yet.
Paramount+ Developing Cop Land TV Series
The original Cop Land movie was released in 1997 and became one of Mangold’s defining early features. The crime drama starred Sylvester Stallone as Freddy Heflin, a small-town New Jersey sheriff surrounded by corrupt New York City cops. The cast also included Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel and Ray Liotta, giving the film the kind of heavyweight ensemble that still makes it a regular point of conversation among crime-movie fans.
A series version gives Paramount+ room to widen that world. The premise naturally fits long-form television: police politics, buried secrets, moral compromise, and a community where the line between law enforcement and organized corruption can get dangerously thin.
James Mangold Returns to Cop Land With Robert Levine
Mangold’s involvement is the headline here. Since Cop Land, he has gone on to direct films including Walk the Line, Logan, Ford v Ferrari and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. His return gives the adaptation a direct creative link to the original movie rather than feeling like a simple brand revival.
Robert Levine is also attached to the project. Levine’s TV background makes him a strong fit for shaping the material into an ongoing series, especially if Paramount+ aims to build a character-driven crime drama rather than a straightforward remake.
Why Cop Land Fits Paramount+’s Crime Drama Strategy
The move also makes sense for Paramount+. The service has had success with tough, adult-skewing dramas, including MobLand and Landman. A Cop Land Paramount+ series could sit neatly in that lane, especially for viewers who respond to crime stories built around power, loyalty and corruption.
It is also a smart catalog play. Instead of launching an unknown crime title from scratch, Paramount+ can build on a respected film with a recognizable name and a filmmaker still actively connected to the property. That does not guarantee a series order, but it gives the project a strong starting point.
Cop Land Series Release Date and Cast Updates
At this stage, there is no official Cop Land series release date. Paramount+ has only landed the project for development, so fans should not expect a premiere announcement until scripts, creative plans and casting come together.
No actors have been announced for the new version. It is also unclear whether the series will follow new characters in the same universe, reimagine the film’s story, or use the original premise as a launchpad for a broader police-corruption drama.
Where Can You Watch the Cop Land Series?
If the project moves forward to a series order, Cop Land will be watched on Paramount+. Paramount+ is available in the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as in select European markets, including parts of the EU such as Italy, France, Germany and Austria. Availability can vary by country, so viewers should check their local Paramount+ service for confirmation when the show is officially released.
