Apple appears to be getting ready to solve a problem that only gets more relevant as iPhones become more varied, more specialized, and, in some cases, much larger. A new iOS 27 feature called iPhone Handoff is expected to let two iPhones work together while sharing the same phone number.
The feature was briefly mentioned during Apple’s WWDC presentation in June, but the company did not spend much time explaining how it would work. Now, a newly surfaced demo suggests iPhone Handoff may allow users to pair one iPhone as a primary device and another as a companion phone.

Based on the reported demo, iPhone Handoff is designed to make switching between two iPhones feel less like juggling devices and more like moving naturally from one screen to another. The setup appears inside Xcode 27’s Device Hub, where users can connect two iPhones and assign one as the main device.
The second iPhone would then act as a companion, potentially giving users access to calls, messages, and core phone functionality through the same number. Apple already offers Handoff across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch for tasks like browsing, email, and calls. This version, however, sounds much more phone-specific.

The biggest appeal is convenience. Many people already own an older iPhone sitting in a drawer, while others may want a smaller backup device for travel, workouts, commuting, or nights out. That is where iPhone Handoff could become more than a neat software trick. It could give Apple a practical answer for users who love the idea of a foldable iPhone but still want the freedom of carrying a smaller device when the situation calls for it.
How iPhone Handoff could change Apple’s device strategy
If Apple launches this feature broadly, it could quietly change how people think about upgrading. Instead of replacing an old iPhone and forgetting about it, users might keep that device active as a paired companion. Families could also find value in reusing older iPhones in more flexible ways, depending on how Apple handles security, Apple ID requirements, and carrier support.
There are still major questions. Will every carrier support one number across two iPhones? Will both devices need to be physically nearby?
