“Twisters” has stormed the box office, raking in $80.5 million in North America, marking it as the third-largest opening weekend of the year.
According to Comscore, “Twisters” ticket sales in the US and Canada trail only behind “Inside Out 2” ($154.2 million) and “Dune: Part Two” ($82.5 million) for the year’s biggest starts. It also claims the top opening for a natural disaster movie, surpassing “The Day After Tomorrow,” which debuted with $68.4 million in 2004.
Lee Isaac Chung’s blockbuster sequel also earned an additional $42.7 million internationally, bringing its global box office total to $123.2 million against a reported budget of $155 million. In comparison, the original “Twister,” released in 1996, grossed $494 million worldwide on a $92 million budget.
“Twisters” is a standalone sequel to the iconic Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt disaster film. Set once again in the tornado-stricken plains of Oklahoma, it follows a new storm-chasing team led by Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos as they face the fury of nature together.
The film premiered in theaters on July 19 and has garnered generally favorable reviews. IGN rated “Twisters” 8 out of 10, noting that while it may not be as visually striking as its predecessor, it offers a more emotionally engaging experience, making it an “effective summer blockbuster” best enjoyed on the largest and loudest screen available.
Universal has yet to announce a streaming release date for “Twisters,” but it will eventually be available on Peacock, followed by Prime Video.
